THE NEW-FANGLED GARBAGE “THEOLOGY” ABOUT PROPHETS – PART 2

I’ve been told by people that John the Baptist was the last of the OT prophets, and therefore NT prophets shouldn’t be strong or forthright, AKA “judgmental” by people who don’t want to hear the truth.  So, I decided to study it all out, because you know, I like to study like the Bereans in Acts to “see if these things be true”.  I wrote out some similarities and differences of Jesus and John the Baptist:

Jesus and JtB similarities:

1. Developed in the wilderness. (Matthew 3:1; Matthew 4:1)

2.  Preached repentance. (Matthew 3:2; Matthew 4:17, plus more in the other Gospels)

3.  Baptized.  John w/water (Matthew 3:6)  Jesus with Holy Spirit and fire. (Matthew 3:11)

4.  Confronted religious leaders of their day (Matthew 3:17; Matthew 12:31, plus more in the other Gospels)

5.  Exposed sin. (Matthew 14:4; Matthew 21:11 & John 14:17)

6.  People came to them to listen. (Matthew 3:1 &5; Matthew 4:25, plus more… )

Jesus and JtB differences:

1.  Wore different clothes. (Matthew 3:4) (John 19:23; Matthew 3:11: Matthew 9:20)

2.  Eating Habits (Matthew 11:18-19; Matthew 3:4)

3.  John didn’t do miracles, and Jesus did.  (John 10:41; Matthew 4:23-24)

I was struck by the importance of Mark 6:14-16.  A lot of people look at this Scripture as being about John the Baptist, because it was.  However, it is also about Jesus.:

14 Now King Herod heard of Him, for His name had become well known. And he said, “John the Baptist is risen from the dead, and therefore these powers are at work in him.”

15 Others said, “It is Elijah.”

And others said, “It is [c]the Prophet, or like one of the prophets.”

16 But when Herod heard, he said, “This is John, whom I beheaded; he has been raised from the dead!” 17 For Herod himself had sent and laid hold of John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife; for he had married her. 18 Because John had said to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”

Something about both of their their ministries were similar, because Herod thought that Jesus was John the Baptist raised from the dead.  It wasn’t how they dressed, ate, or acted.  They didn’t look the same, not even close!   It wasn’t even their ministries, because John baptized with water and Jesus didn’t.  His disciples did.  John didn’t do miracles, but Jesus did.  It was their words-  the message of the Gospel, spoken with authority!  Both of their ministries made people uncomfortable because of the truth.  The love didn’t make them uncomfortable, did it?

So, with all of this in mind, if John the Baptist was the “last” prophet of the old way, and nowadays prophets sound and look completely different, as some claim, then how come Jesus was compared to John the Baptist by the people of His day?
